London dominates UK’s top 20 burglary hotspots list

January 27, 2014

Over half1 of the UK’s most robbed areas are in London, new research has revealed.

The top 20 list of burglary hotspots in the UK is based on analysis of over 3.1 million home insurance quote requests submitted to website MoneySupermarket over the past year.

Chorlton in Manchester topped the hotspots list as, for every 1000 people living in the suburban M21 postcode, an average of 45.2 made a claim for burglary. SE24, which covers Herne Hill and Tulse Hill in south London, took second place with 41.8 claims, and north London’s upmarket Muswell Hill closely followed with 40.9.

Areas in Leeds and Birmingham also feature prominently on the list.

Kevin Pratt from MoneySupermarket said, “Just because somewhere is named a claim hotspot, it doesn't actually mean the area in question is not a nice place to live.

“Thieves often target areas with wealthy residents and desirable properties where the rewards are potentially greater or quieter areas where they think there is less risk of being caught red-handed.”

Jim Madden, chairman for the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network for England and Wales, explains that something as simple as getting to know the people living on your street can help to tackle burglaries so neighbours can raise alarm if they notice something amiss.
