Childcare costs soar by 19% in just one year

January 15, 2014

The cost of childcare in Britain has seen a price surge of 19%* in just one year,’s latest research has revealed.

Likened to a second mortgage, the financial burden of childcare has resulted in unemployed parents struggling to return to work because they cannot afford to have their children looked after. Those hit the hardest are families living in Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford, London and Leeds.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of the parenting website Netmums, warns that this situation has a ‘triple whammy’ impact on society; unemployed parents remain on benefits, mothers are prevented from climbing the career ladder and economic recovery is stifled as willing workers are alienated from the workforce.

Worryingly, half of those surveyed do not feel the government is doing enough to help with childcare, although this figure does demonstrate a 7% drop on last year’s findings.

Childcare is one of the most important deciding factors for parents taking out life insurance. With cover, you could ensure your children’s care fees and education costs would be taken care of if the worst was to happen to you.
